Why my heart is in the Midwest...
Posted by Sarah Angst on
Guess what? I grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. My parents moved to Canada from Minnesota after they graduated from college and got married. Winnipeg was in need of teachers so they decide heck, let's go on an adventure. Well, that adventure never ended! They still live in Manitoba after 48 years.
My brother and I, however, have relocated back to the US. The migration started when I decided to attend the University of Minnesota - Duluth for college to be closer to my grandmothers. Moving to Duluth changed the trajectory of my life and I am forever grateful for it. That city on the shores of Lake Superior gave me so much; lifelong friendships, my love of printmaking, my husband, and my love of lakes and the Minnesota wilderness.
Living in Northern Minnesota has inspired so many of my images. "Solitude" above is a personal (and customer!) favorite. And Chickadees (below) is the first linoleum block print I ever created.
With this image, all of the color is printed at once, so it is what is called a "2 block - 6 color reduction" block print. This is the only original in my line I have created this way. The rest of my originals are printed using a more traditional method - I carve a linoleum block and print my outlines in black ink, then paint the white spaces with high quality watercolor paints.

Siiviis & Sivertson Gallery, located in Duluth and Grand Marias, Minnesota, truly gave me one of my big breaks and I am so thankful for them. I walked into Siiviis in Canal Park one afternoon with a mentor, Rick Allen. I have loved Rick Allen’s work for years. He is a master printmaker and his art, prints, and posters were a huge inspiration to me as I was getting started as a professional artist, and he was willing to introduce me to his best selling gallery. Without that introduction I don’t think I would have ever been able to get into Siiviis. It remains my best selling gallery for 12 years.
